The cost of polystyrene foam has been on the rise for some time now. In fact, the price has increased 5% in January of 2021. There are many factors that have contributed to this increase. Most of these factors relate to the supply and demand of polystyrene.
Demand for polystyrene has risen as a result of increasing urbanization. Polystyrene is used for building insulation, marine applications, and for packaging. It can be used for various shapes and sizes and is a very lightweight material.
Foam manufacturing uses a significant amount of energy and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It can be difficult to recycle after it is used. Moreover, polystyrene is a carcinogen.
Some municipalities have banned single-use polystyrene containers. However, there are still some businesses that use polystyrene foam. Despite this, there are many alternatives available that are cheaper than polystyrene, such as reusable items. These items include durable plates, utensils, and cups.
The increase in cost for polystyrene foam is due to the rising cost of raw materials. A combination of bad weather, high labor costs, and freight costs has led to shortages of materials. This has hampered foam fabricators and manufacturers. As a result, they are passing on higher costs to customers.

Yet, EPS is a controversial topic, especially since it is not biodegradable. Several companies are fighting over its usage. Ultimately, the controversy is similar to the debate over plastic versus paper.
Regardless of which side of the debate you’re on, it’s important to know what EPS is and where it’s used. Despite the controversy, EPS is a versatile material. Unlike paper, it’s able to be cut and formed into nearly any shape. Also, it’s a better insulator than traditional tin foil. Nonetheless, it can take a long time to break down. Eventually, it will end up in the ocean.
Because of its environmental concerns, many municipalities have banned single-use EPS foam containers. For example, San Diego passed an ordinance to limit the use of expanded polystyrene foam products. But this policy will only go into effect in May of 2023.
New York State has also enacted a ban on the use of polystyrene foam for meals. In addition to this, a group of EPS producers have worked with city officials to lift the restriction.
While there’s no doubt that there are numerous benefits to EPS, there are also a number of downsides. Although EPS can help maintain the temperature of cold food, it is not sustainable. Unlike paper, it is not recyclable. Ultimately, the decision whether or not to use EPS should be determined by the individual.
